Puerto Rico’s ability to feed itself threatened by climate crisis

Hurricane Fiona destroyed about 90% of the plantain crop in Puerto Rico when it buffeted the archipelago. This destruction has caused a shortage of plantains across the country, meaning that Puerto Ricans will be without their iconic food during the winter holidays. But the situation could have been avoided if Puerto Rico invested in food autonomy, as well as climate change mediation strategies to deal with the flooding caused by ever-more normal extreme weather events.
